This promises to be Richard Aronowitz-Mercer’s most interesting and successful sale yet. Following our success with modern Russian paintings and drawings in December 2005 we have an exciting array of modernist Russian works of art, which form the sale’s backbone. The highlights include an extremely fine /Constructivist/ painting by the Russian-Jewish painter, El Lissitzky. Entitled /Proun/, this canvas has been in the collection of the same family for nearly sixty years. Lissitzky's works of this quality are rarities at auction and this wonderful example is estimated at Ј220,000-280,000. The sale also includes about sixty Russian and Eastern European works of art from the 1890s to the 1960s, encompassing drawings, watercolours, paintings, sculptures and propaganda posters. With prices ranging from Ј200 to over Ј200,000, the scope of this section of the sale is very broad and caters for all tastes and budgets.
Other works include a very fine, Chagall-like portrait in oils, /Man with a Beard/, by Natan Altman at Ј50,000-70,000; a lively 1914 gouache costume design for /Le Coq d'or/ by Natalia Goncharova at Ј1,800-2,500; a vibrant abstract composition in gouache by Sonia Delaunay at Ј5,000-7,000; and a beautiful watercolour portrait from 1892, /Vera Ilyinishna Repina/, by the Russian Impressionist Ilya Repin at Ј7,000-9,000. Alongside this richness of Russian works the sale also features a strong Impressionist & Modern European Art section, including a very fine 1969 drawing of a Female Bust by Pablo Picasso at Ј7,000-9,000; two bronze sculptures by Salvador Dali; a delightful watercolour of flowers from 1939 by Oskar Kokoschka at Ј6,000-8,000; and a fine 1970 oil-painting of a colourful and near-abstract /Dog/ by the later COBRA artist, Karel Appel at Ј25,000-35,000.Modern British Art closes the sale encompassing paintings, watercolours, drawings and sculptures by landmark artists such as Patrick Procktor, Augustus John, Francis Newton Souza, John Bratby, Josef Herman, Stanley William Hayter and Edward Burne-Jones.
