The Song-Bird of St Petersburg at the Royal Albert Hall
On Monday 19th May at 7.45pm Russia?s greatest living songwriter, Boris Purushottama GREBENSHIKOV (BG) will return to the stage at London?s prestigious Royal Albert Hall.
He will be joined by an international ensemble including musicians BRIAN FINNEGAN and JOHN JOE KELLY from the Award winning Anglo/Irish group FLOOK, Sitar player SHEEMA MUKHERJEE, Tabla player ALOK VERMA, Polish Sarangi player MARIA POMIANOWSKA, former Aquarium bassist SASHA TITOV and several other accomplished classical, folk and jazz virtuosos.
In a prolific career that started in the Soviet era and has spanned more than three decades Grebenshikov has continued to enchant his audiences with new sounds and a lyrical language that has earned him the affectionate title 'Poet Laureate of Russia'. His music has incorporated a range of styles, from folk and blues to translucent acoustics - and includes a whole slew of various ethnic and folklore influences, from Celtic to Asian.
Although Boris usually performs and records with his band Aquarium, he has periodically taken some time to do solo projects, collaborating with other musicians like DAVE STEWART and ANNIE LENNOX of EURYTHMICS. In this one night only concert he has gathered together highly talented musicians from various traditions to produce a fusion of his own classic folk melodies with sounds from around the world.
"As far back as I can remember I was singing - since I was three or four. I always felt this strange feeling when I was listening to music that it means more than people give it credit for. Music has a special sort of enchantment that works when you hear the first couple of notes. I would say that music is sort of an ocean, so I just venture into the ocean and I follow the waves".
Grebenshikov is also known as a student of religion and mysticism. He has translated several Hindu and Buddhist texts for publication in Russian and traveled the Orient widely. "There is a great silence inside of everybody, the source of all inspiration, of everything. I always prefer to let music speak for itself and then the human puppet has no further words".
In February 2006 Grebenshikov met the Indian spiritual teacher SRI CHINMOY. Sri Chinmoy blessed Boris with the name Purushottama, which relates to 'the one who is beyond all limitations'. Sri Chinmoy inspired Boris to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2007 much to the delight of the capacity audience who attended. In August 2007 Grebenshikov was invited to perform at the United Nations building in New York.
This concert is dedicated to his dearest teacher and friend Sri Chinmoy (1931 ? 2007).
